UK Unmarried Partner Visa

Understanding the UK Unmarried Partner Visa

The UK Unmarried Partner Visa allows individuals in a lasting relationship with a British citizen or someone permanently settled in the UK to live in the country for an initial period of up to 33 months. This visa is applicable to both opposite and same-sex couples who have been in a genuine relationship for at least 2 years. Successful applicants can extend their stay for an additional 30 months and may eventually qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), granting them permanent residency.

This visa offers a pathway for unmarried couples to build a life together in the UK, respecting their commitment and dedication to each other.

Eligibility for an Unmarried Partner Visa

You can apply for this visa if you and your partner are both over 18 and have been in a committed relationship for at least 2 years. Your partner must be a British or Irish citizen, have permanent residency status, or be protected under the EU Settlement Scheme. This visa also applies if your partner holds a Turkish Businessperson or Worker visa, or has refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK. In some cases, you may still be eligible if living outside the UK poses significant challenges for you as a couple.

Key Requirements for Application

  • Age: Both partners must be at least 18 years old.
  • Relationship: You must have lived together in a relationship akin to marriage or civil partnership for 2 years.
  • Living Plans: There should be an intention to live together permanently in the UK.
  • Financial Stability: You must have enough money to support yourselves and any dependants without needing public funds.
  • English Proficiency: You need to speak English to an acceptable level.

Financial Considerations

The visa requires a minimum income of £18,600, plus additional amounts for any dependent children (£3,800 for the first child and £2,400 for each additional child). Various sources of income are considered, including employment, self-employment, pensions, and savings over £16,000.

English Language and Accommodation Requirements

Applicants need to demonstrate English language proficiency, typically through a test or an academic qualification taught in English. You must also prove that you have suitable living arrangements in the UK.
